Known for its impressive medieval architecture, stunning Adriatic coastline, and fascinating history, Dubrovnik has plenty for travellers of all ages. But, because there’s so much on offer, it can get really busy, especially during the summer months.
So, is it worth visiting Dubrovnik? Absolutely – we loved our Croatia family trip which included Dubrovnik. But think about timing your visit to avoid the worst of the crowds.
Read on for our guide on what to do on your Dubrovnik trip.
7 Reasons to Visit Dubrovnik
There are lots of reasons to visit Dubrovnik, but here are my top seven:
1. The History
Dubrovnik’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site bursting at the seams with medieval architecture, Baroque churches, and historic landmarks. Highlights include the impressive City Walls, the Rector’s Palace, and St. Blaise’s Church.
Taking a walk around Dubrovnik and visiting these historic sites should be top of the list if you’re on a fleeting visit and you’re looking for things to do in Dubrovnik in 1 day.

2. The Breathtaking Views
Walking along Dubrovnik’s City Walls offers panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea, the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town, and the gorgeous island of Lokrum. The views are particularly beautiful at sunset (although this is a busier time to go).

Climbing to the top of the Minčeta Tower or taking a cable car ride to Mount Srđ provides even more breathtaking views of the old town.

3. The Beaches
Dubrovnik is home to some beautiful beaches where you can relax and enjoy the clear, turquoise water. Banje Beach, located just outside the Old Town, is the most popular, offering sun loungers, water sports, and great views.
Other great beaches include Lapad Beach, ideal for families, and Sveti Jakov Beach, a more secluded spot perfect for a peaceful retreat.

4. The Food
We were seriously impressed with the food in Croatia. Dubrovnik offers a delicious array of local cuisine. Don’t miss trying fresh seafood, especially the local specialities black risotto and black spaghetti.
Make sure you try traditional dishes like Peka (meat or seafood slow-cooked under a domed lid) and Dubrovnik-style rožata, a caramel custard dessert.
For the best seafood, head to Bota Šare, and for an authentic Croatian dining experience, try Konoba Dubrava.
Since Dubrovnik has an excellent food scene, one of the best things to do is a food tour.

5. Adriatic Adventures & Boat Tours
Dubrovnik is a great base for exploring the Adriatic Sea. The 3 Islands Tour, which visits the Elafiti Islands (Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan), is a must-do. Enjoy swimming, snorkelling, and experiencing the peaceful beauty of these islands.
Sea kayaking around the city walls and nearby caves offers another exciting way to see Dubrovnik from a unique perspective.

Dubrovnik is great for families, offering a range of activities for children. The Dubrovnik Aquarium is a great stop for kids, while Lokrum Island, just a short boat ride away, offers nature walks, peacocks, and a small lake for swimming.
The Dubrovnik Cable Car is a fun ride with amazing views, and Banje Beach is perfect for a day of sun and sea.

Lapad
A quieter area with beaches and family-friendly accommodations. Great for those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere. We stayed in the Royal Princess in this area. Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you’re looking for in your trip. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons to help you decide:
Spring (March to June)
Spring is one of the best times to visit Dubrovnik. The weather is pleasantly warm, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), and the city isn’t as crowded as in the summer.
This is an excellent time for sightseeing, outdoor activities, and enjoying the landscapes and views. It might still be a little chilly for swimming in the sea, however.
Summer (July and August)
Summer is peak tourist season in Dubrovnik. The weather is hot and sunny, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F). This is the best time to visit for beach lovers and those who enjoy festivals and a lively atmosphere.
However, the city can get really crowded, and prices for accommodation and tours are at their highest. It might also be a little hot for some.
Autumn (September to October)
Autumn, like Spring, is another excellent time to visit Dubrovnik. The weather remains warm, especially in September, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 28°C (64°F to 82°F).
The crowds begin to thin out, and the sea is still warm enough for swimming. This season offers a perfect balance of decent weather and fewer tourists.
Be aware that, if you visit later on in the Autumn, some restaurants and tourist attractions may be starting to close for the season.
Winter (November to February)
Winter is the low season in Dubrovnik. The weather is mild but can be rainy, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F). It’s obviously not the time to visit if you’re looking for sunny weather and beach activities.
While some attractions and restaurants may be closed, this is the best time for those looking to explore the city without the crowds and for those wanting to travel on a budget.

Dubrovnik FAQ
Here are the answers to a few common questions about Dubrovnik:
Is Dubrovnik Expensive?
Dubrovnik can be more expensive than other Croatian destinations, particularly during peak tourist season.
However, with a bit of planning, you can find affordable accommodation, restaurants, and activities.
If you’re travelling on a budget, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn/ fall) when prices are lower and the city is less crowded.
Is the Dubrovnik Pass Worth It?
The Dubrovnik Pass offers great value, especially if you plan to visit multiple attractions.
It includes entry to the City Walls, several museums, and discounts at various restaurants and shops.
For most visitors, the pass is a worthwhile investment and it’s also convenient. But of course, it depends on how busy you want to be, and how much you want to fit in to one day.
Getting to Dubrovnik – Airport Shuttle Dubrovnik
Getting from Dubrovnik Airport to the city centre is easy with several options available.
The Dubrovnik airport shuttle bus is a convenient and affordable option, with regular departures coinciding with flight arrivals. It goes from Dubrovnik airport to Dubrovnik’s main bus station and takes around 30 to 40 minutes.
Taxis and private transfers are also available if you’d prefer a more direct journey.
Where Else in Croatia Should We Visit?
We combined Dubrovnik with a short stay in Split and a couple of the Croatian islands on our Family Holiday in Croatia. We chose the islands Brac and Korcula and we loved both. Our trip lasted ten days, with three days in each location.
While this wasn’t too rushed, we would have loved to stay for longer – and to explore more Croatian islands.
Is Dubrovnik Worth Visiting: The Verdict
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a visit to Dubrovnik. Its blend of history, amazing food, beauty and unbeatable views makes it a standout destination. We’d love to go back.
Think about visiting in the Spring or Summer, if you can, as I found the crowds quite full on – especially around the Old Town. This is one of the reasons we enjoyed staying outside of the city in Lapad so much – and we chose to eat at the hotel in the evenings for this reason too.
