Best Books About Kindness For Kids:
I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai with Patricia McCormick
Adapted for a teen/ tween readership, the impact of this book is two-fold. It helps young people think about the difficult life experiences other young people around the world might be encountering.
Meanwhile, it also allows them to appreciate acts of selflessness, the importance of standing up for what you believe in and fighting for the rights of others. All conveyed through Malala’s own personal story.
Inspirational and moving, Malala’s story is powerful and one every young person today should be aware of.
You Are Awesome by Matthew Syed
Before Marcus Rashford, there was Matthew Syed! The focus of this book is confidence and believing in yourself.
However, You Are Awesome also highlights how important perseverance is. Practice isn’t always something kids want to partake in but as we all know, it’s vital in the quest for improvement.
This book is about being kind to yourself in the face of growing pressure and uncertainty – and focusing on something you love. Every kid has something they are awesome at!
Wonder by R J Palacio
A wonderful story which focuses on what it feels like to be different. It encourages compassion and empathy and the ability to reflect on our own behaviour.
I particularly like the fact that the author chooses to tell the story from several other children’s points of view as well. It prompts us to understand how sometimes there’s challenging stuff going on for everyone – even ‘the bully’.
The message is one of tolerance and acceptance and it’s also a children’s book about respect. If we don’t know what’s going on for someone, let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and be kind…
Wonder is definitely becoming one of the classics when it comes to books about kindness.
The Little Snake by A. L. Kennedy
Now, I’m not a fan of snakes – but this little book, perhaps not commonly known, is delightful and touching and one of the loveliest stories about kindness. It’s beautifully written with some stand-out lines. You’ll want to go back and read over them again.
I read this one to both my kids and they were entranced; it’ll stay with you long after you’ve finished it.
It’s a story, or fable really, about enduring friendship, love and loss in the face of poverty, greed and injustice. The protagonist Mary and the Snake have a special bond which will definitely make you smile.
Tomorrow I’ll be Kind by Jessica Hische
One for younger readers, this children’s book on kindness follows on from Jessica’s ‘Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave’.
With gorgeous illustrations, it’s simple but effective.
This kindness book will prompt questions and plant seeds in the littlest minds and help them think about being helpful, proactive and patient towards others.
I hope one or two of these books about kindness for kids have resonated with you and that you might give one or more of them a try. Happy reading…
